Wombats
Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats were once widely distributed across semi-arid regions of southern Australia. The distribution is now severely fragmented with remaining major groups found on the Nullarbor Plain, Eyre Peninsula, the Gawler Ranges and the Murraylands. Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats grow up to about 3ft (90cm) long, about 1ft (30cm) tall and weigh up to about 30kg. They survive in hot dry semi-arid environment by spending most of the day underground in long deep burrows, then spending most of the night foraging for grasses and forbs.
